VNMU was established in the year that the Vice-President of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, academician D.K. Zabolotny asked to the Government regarding the necessity of establishing an educational medical center in Vinnitsya to cater to the needs of the country in healthcare. VNMU began its existence as Vinnitsya Pharmaceutical Institute (1921-1936) then later changed to Vinnitsya branch of the All-Ukrainian Institute of Extra-Mural Medical Education (1930) and changed its name in 1932, becoming Evening Industrial Medical Institute with two faculties: medical-preventive and pediatric. It was renamed in 1934 it became Vinnitsya Medical Institute (1934).
In 1960, as per in 1960, by Decree of Presidium of the Supreme Body of the U.S.S.R. In 1960, the Institute was named in honor of
N.I. Pirogov. In 1969, 2235 students were enrolled in two faculties at the Institute (medical as well as pediatric) The faculties grew to include 26 , doctors and students of science. In 1984, the Institute was recognized with an Order “Badge of Honour” for its achievements in training doctors and providing medical services for the general public. By 1988, VNMU elected V.M.Moroz as rector. He was at that time an acknowledged scientist and technologist from Ukraine as well as doctor of medical sciences Professor as well as a graduate from Vinnitsya Medical Institute and he has been through all the administrative levels at the institute, including the director of scientific boards dean’s deputy director of the department of paediatrics and and pro-rector for education — teaching. V.M. Moroz has the capacity of an administrator as well as a scientist and tutor. He also heads VNMU which has grown to more than 7000 people. Moroz is instrumental in improving the training of specialists and introduces the latest educational technology as well as modernizes the base of education as well as improves the tuition conditions for students, and boosts the compensation for teachers.
