Northern State Medical University (NSMU) was founded in 1932 to provide medical training to the European North of Russia. Currently, it has 16 faculties and institutes that enroll around 9000 students from 17 different countries. The university is staffed with 980, including 394 academics, 80 of whom are professors, and 250 hold PhDs.

Modern appliances such as computers, films, and video aids equip the university buildings. Additionally, the modern center of preclinical training offers state-of-the-art medical mannequins and equipment as part of the educational program. 

There are 55 departments in total, 27 of which are clinical and located in the best hospitals in the city. The well-equipped clinical base enables the training of highly qualified specialists in different fields according to modern healthcare system requirements.

This is currently the primary medical training center for six regions of Northern Russia. More than 100 graduates are working abroad in countries such as the USA, UK, Canada, Israel, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, and Denmark. 22 graduates hold foreign scientific degrees (PhD), and around 30 graduates are currently preparing to obtain their PhDs in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Germany.

The university offers students practical studies and training both in Russia and abroad to become doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and other related medical professionals. NSMU graduates are currently working in more than 20 countries, and the number of international students enrolling in the university is continuously increasing.

Background and history

The institution began as the Arkhangelsk Medical Institute in 1932, created to supply doctors to the sparsely populated but strategically important north of Russia. It became Northern State Medical Academy in 1994, then was reorganized as Northern State Medical University in 2000, reflecting expanded programs and research activities. Today, it functions under Russia’s Ministry of Healthcare as a federal state budgetary institution of higher education.

Eligibility Criteria For Northern State Medical University

According to the MCI regulations, the eligibility criteria for Indian students to be admitted here are as follows:

1. Students must have completed 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English as core subjects.

2. Completion of upper secondary school with ≥ 50% in Chemistry, Biology, and Physics.

3. Candidates in the reserved category must achieve a minimum score of 40%.

3. A student must be at least 17 years old.

4. To be eligible for admission to undergraduate MBBS/BDS courses, students must pass the NEET-UG exam with the minimum required marks.

     • For students belonging to the General/EWS category, the minimum required percentile is 50th.

     • Students belonging to the PwD category require a minimum percentile of 45%, while those in SC/ST/OBC categories require 40%.
